Resolution of the Tennessee Chapter of the National Coalition for

the Preservation of Indigenous Cultures Advocating the

Elimination of Native American Mascots and Symbols

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Chapter of the National Coalition for the Preservation of Indigenous Cultures is dedicated to the preservation and protection of First Nations People and Culture through the education of the First People’s history, culture and issues and through involvement in First Nations issues; and,

WHEREAS, the usage of Native American mascots and symbols by schools, colleges, universities and sports teams is derogatory, offensive and degrading to First Nations People; and,

WHEREAS, said usage promotes inaccurate, stereotypical views, attitudes and images of First Nations People and Culture thus perpetuating racism and inhibiting an accurate understanding of Indigenous People and Culture; and,

WHEREAS, said usage is sacrilegious and disrespectful of sacred objects and ceremonial traditions of First Nations People.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Tennessee Chapter of the National Coalition for the Preservation of Indigenous Cultures advocates the elimination of Native American mascots and symbols by schools, colleges, universities and sports teams; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Tennessee Chapter of the National Coalition for the Preservation of Indigenous Cultures respectfully calls upon all schools, colleges, universities and sports teams to voluntarily discontinue their usage of all Native American mascots and symbols; and,

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, the Tennessee Chapter of the National Coalition for the Preservation of Indigenous Cultures will diligently work alone and in coordination with other individuals and organizations to eliminate the usage of Native American mascots and symbols while providing educational opportunities that accurately represent First Nations People and Culture.
