Resolution endorsing NASA (Native American Student's Organization) Efforts to Combat Racially Stereotypical Mascots
WHEREAS, the Student Government Association is the official student governing body of Illinois State University,
WHEREAS, racial stereotypes pervade society today, especially in intercollegiate and professional athletic competitions;
WHEREAS, the Illinois State University schedules athletic competitions with universities that use Native American school mascots;
WHEREAS, the Native American Student Association reports that its student constituency feels exploited by the use of Native American school mascots; and
WHEREAS, the Native American Student Association works tirelessly to combat racially stereotypical mascots;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Assembly of the Student Government Association expresses its support for the leadership and members of the Native American Student Association in their efforts to combat racially stereotypical mascots;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Assembly of the Student Government Association authorizes the SGA Administration to assist the Native American Student Association in its efforts to prevent Illinois State University from competing with other institutions of higher education that exploit racially stereotypical images as mascots;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Assembly of the Student Government Association directs the President of the Student Body to make inquiry of the University administration about current or potential University policy regarding racially stereotypical mascots; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Assembly of the Student Government Association directs the President of the Student Body to transmit signature copies of this resolution to the President of the University, the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director of Athletics, and the Academic Senate.
